Great Lakes Loons News Release
Felix Carrasco, who won the 2008 Midwest League Home Run Derby, powered by Dow Corning, during this year's all-star events, drilled a go-ahead two run home run to break a 2-2 tie as the Fort Wayne Wizards picked up a 5-2 victory over the Great Lakes Loons in front of 5,270 fans at Dow Diamond Friday night.
The Loons scored first in the opening inning when Jovanny Rosario followed Erik Kanaby's leadoff triple with an RBI groundout to second, scoring Kanaby to make it 1-0. They added another run in the second when Francisco Lizarraga ripped an RBI single to right-center field to give the Loons a 2-0 lead.
Fort Wayne got two runs in the third inning when Adam Zornes drove in the Wizards' first run with an RBI single. Then with Lance Zawadzki at the plate, a groundball was hit towards Lizarraga at short, who flipped the ball to second baseman Parker Dalton for a force out. Presumably because runners didn't know whether or not Lizarraga caught the baseball, confused Wizards base runners hesitated before attempting to advance a base. Dalton tried to throw out Robert Perry at home, but his throw sailed too high for Jessie Mier to apply a quick tag. Then Mier, who had a chance by throwing the ball to third, held the baseball allowing Brad Chalk to advance to third without a throw and Fort Wayne tied the game at two.
Carrasco launched his two-run homer in the sixth off Loons reliever Eric Thompson to give Fort Wayne a 4-2 lead, a lead they would never relinquish.
Thompson picked up the loss to fall to 0-1 after pitching five innings allowing the two runs on three hits. Thompson retired the seven batters consecutively twice in his outing. Cory Kluber pitched six solid innings allowing only two runs to pick up the victory to improve to 4-3 on the season.
The Loons continue their four-game series with Fort Wayne Wizards Saturday night at Dow Diamond with their last evening contest of the season. Game time is 7:05pm and is Star Wars Night at the ballpark. Saturday's game is sold out, but there are still great seats available for Sunday and Monday's games by logging onto Loons.com or by calling 989-837-BALL.
The Great Lakes Loons are the second-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
