Kernels rally comes up short in 3-1 loss to Wisconsin

The Cedar Rapids Kernels came up short in their bid to sweep the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 3-1, on Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI. The Kernels had the tying runs on base with two outs in the ninth, but Wisconsin reliever Rob Harmon got Jay Brossman to fly out to end the game.

Kernels starter Michael Davitt (6-9) allowed three runs on 10 hits, struck out 10 and walked just one in taking the loss. The Kernels were held to four hits as Hector Estrella was 2-4 with a double. Wisconsin starter Keith Meyer (3-5) picked up the win, allowing just three hits over six scoreless innings.

The Kernels scored their run in the eight as Tyler Johnson walked and moved to second on a passed ball. Johnson then stole third and scored on an error by 3b Alex Liddi.

With the loss, the Kernels remain 3.5 games behind Burlington for first place in the MWL West with four games to play. The Kernels will most likely host Clinton in the first round of the MWL Playoffs on Wednesday, September 3rd at 6:30 pm.

The Kernels return to Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday to host Clinton in what could be a preview of the playoffs. It's a 94.1 KRNA Progressive Beer Night - draft beer starts at $1 when the gates open at 6 pm and goes up a buck every hour until it reaches full price. After the game, enjoy a spectacular fireworks show, presented by the Kernels and KWWL.
