Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - The New York Yankees announced Thursday that RiverDogs starting pitcher Philip Hughes has been activated from the disabled list and promoted to High A Tampa. The RiverDogs have also placed starting pitcher Eric Hacker on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder and LHP Abel Gomez has been transferred from Tampa to take Hacker's place on Charleston's active roster.

Hughes went 7-1 with a 1.97 ERA in 12 starts with the RiverDogs. The Yankees first-round pick in 2004 leaves the South Atlantic League second in ERA and tied for second in wins. A native of Santa Ana, CA, Hughes was named the starting pitcher for the Southern Division in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game, but withdrew from the game after being placed on the disabled list on June 17 due to mild inflammation in his shoulder.

Hacker heads to the disabled list pitching well as he has allowed only two earned runs in his last 22 innings and is 3-0 in three starts in the second half. The 23rd round pick in 2002 has allowed only two earned runs in 32 innings at Riley Park this season and was named to the South Atlantic League Southern Division All-Star team.

Gomez went 2-3 with a 3.44 ERA in 13 games, 12 of them starts for Tampa this season. The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, pitched for RiverDogs manager Bill Mosiello in Battle Creek in 2004 and went 9-10 with a 3.66 ERA in 29 games, 25 of them starts. He was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on February 28, 2002.

The RiverDogs are in the midst of an eight-game road trip and will return home July 13 to open an eight-game homestand and a four-contest set with the Hickory Crawdads. Tickets for the homestand can be purchased by visiting the RiverDogs website at www.riverdogs.com or by calling the box office at (843) 577-DOGS.
