Jenkins joins 'Hoppers

(GREENSBORO, NC) The Florida Marlins announced five roster moves effecting the Grasshoppers early this morning. Greensboro catcher Luis Alen has been released from the Florida organization, third baseman Jonathan Fulton has been placed on the disabled list after breaking his thumb in Wednesday night's contest, and Jamestown catcher Trent D'Antonio will join Greensboro along with recent 11th round draft pick Andrew Jenkins of Oregon State University.

Infielder Beau McMillan has been reinstated to the active roster after serving a ten-game suspension.

Catcher Luis Alen has been with the Greensboro team since the start of the season and has been with the Marlins organization since 2002. He began his professional season with San Joaquin in the Venezuelan Summer League. He spent the majority of 2003 and 2004 with short-season Jamestown. He started the 2005 season in Greensboro and played in 40 games as a Grasshopper. In those 40 games he hit .181 including four doubles and eight RBI. He struck out 11 times in 116 at bats. He was originally drafted by the Marlins as a free agent in 2002.

Jonathan Fulton, named the 21st prospect in the Florida organization by Baseball America, broke his thumb last night playing third base on an errant throw from catcher Brad Davis and has been placed on the disabled list. This is Fulton's second season with the Marlins after he was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2003 First-Year Player draft. He is hitting .232 including three triples and 11 homeruns.

Australian catcher Trent D'Antonio will replace Alen in the roster. Starting in Jamestown this season, he has hit .214 in seven games played. He has three hits including a double and has scored five runs. Previous to his signing with the Marlins, he played in both the World AA (U17) Championships in 2001 and hit .437 for the tournament. In 2002, he played in the World AAA (U19) Championships hitting an impressive .370. The Marlins drafted D'Antonio as a Free Agent in 2003.

Bringing up the 25th spot on Greensboro's roster is 2004 Oregon State University standout, infielder Andrew Jenkins. Jenkins was an All-American senior first baseman with OSU. During his senior season, the Beavers had the most wins in school history, won the Pacific-10 Conference championship, won the NCAA regional and super regional and reached the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. for the first time since 1952. So far this season with Jamestown, Jenkins is hitting .500 in four games played. He has seven hits, two runs and one RBI. He was drafted in June in the 11th round of the First Year Player Draft.

The Grasshoppers play the Charleston RiverDogs tonight at First Horizon Park. All beverages are $1.00 on Thursdays. Game time is 7:00PM and the gates will open at 6:00PM.
