BlueClaws fall to Legends in series opener

Lexington, KY - The Lakewood BlueClaws (8-6) opened up a four game series with the Legends (7-7), Single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, in Lexington with an 8-1 loss. Lakewood fell to 3-3 on their current road trip and fell to 0-4 against the Legends this year.

The BlueClaws one run in the game came in the sixth inning with Lakewood already trailing 7-0. Jesus Merchan led off the inning with a double then Greg Golson followed up with a walk. Brad Harman then connected for an RBI double plating Merchan to cut the lead to 7-1.

Nate Johnson (L, 7-4) lasted just 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on 12 hits.

Lakewood trailed early in this game with Lexington taking a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Legends Drew Sutton led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo-homer, his fourth homer of the year. Back-to-back singles set up Ole Sheldon who connected for an RBI base hit to put the Legends up 2-0.

Lexington added another run in the inning when Hunter Pence scored on Brandon Barganier ground ball out to put the Legends up 3-0.

The Legends added three more runs in the third inning to push the lead to 6-0. With one on and one out Bryan Triplett connected for two-run homer, just his second homer of the year. With two outs in the inning and runners on second and third Clint McGill reached on a bunt single allowing Wallace Torbett to score for the sixth run of the game.

Harman finished the night 2-for-4 with while Chris Klemm and Merchan both went 1-for-3 in the game.

Kevin Rose pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief for Lakewood allowing just two walks.

Lakewood and Lexington continue their series on Friday night with Lakewood sending right-hander Maximo De La Cruz (4-7, 4.31) to the mound. The Legends will counter with right-hander Garret Murdy (2-1, 6.75). First pitch on Friday night is at 7:05 p.m. with on-air time at 6:50 p.m. on 1310 WADB and www.blueclaws.com.

This season, the Lakewood BlueClaws are celebrating their fifth anniversary of providing great fun in the Jersey sun. Among the great promotions, fireworks every Friday night home game and kids eat free Monday Nights courtesy of Shop Rite. In addition, the BlueClaws will host games against the New York Mets affiliate.
