Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It's official. The Winnipeg Goldeyes are red-hot.

A great start by Chris Salamida on Tuesday night combined with plenty of runs late in the game gave the Goldeyes a 6-1 win over the St. Paul Saints and a two-game lead over St. Paul in the race for first in the American Association's North Division.

Last night at in front of 5,014 spectators at Midway Stadium in St. Paul, the Goldeyes scored six runs on 14 hits, while Salamida pitched six complete innings and allowed only one run on four scattered hits and struck out eight. The bullpen - last night it was Aaron Cook, Zach Baldwin and Chad Benefield - gave up no runs on two hits over the final three innings.

It was a virtuoso performance.

By winning the first three games of this four-game series in St. Paul, the Goldeyes have now won five straight series on the road and are 6-1 on this eight-game road trip. They've won seven of eight and are now 35-21 on the season, 14 games above .500 for the first time since 2009.

St. Paul opened the scoring in the first inning when leadoff man Adam Frost singled and eventually scored on a single by Jason Cooper. But that was it. The Saints threatened on a couple of occasions, but they couldn't muster another run. Meanwhile, the Goldeyes got their offense together.

In the third, the Fish tied the score at 1-1 when Price Kendall singled, wound up on third and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brian Myrow. In the fifth, Brian Joynt singled and scored the eventual winning run on a single by Kody Kaiser.

Joynt hit a solo homer in the seventh and then, in the ninth, the Goldeyes scored three times as Ridge Carpenter doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Wes Long and with two out, Kaiser walked, went to third on a single by Myrow and then both runners scored on a double by Jon Weber.

It was a tidy and impressive victory and a real tribute to how well the Goldeyes are playing in every aspect of the game.

Salamida (7-1, 2.78 ERA), got the win, while Benefield earned the save, his second of the year. Edwin Walker (3-3, 4.33) suffered the loss for St. Paul.

The finale of this four-game series goes Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. live with Paul Edmonds, on Sports Radio 1290. Isaac Hess will get the start for Winnipeg, while Matt Long will start for St. Paul.
