Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

WICHITA, Ks.---The Shreveport-Bossier Captains were shutout for the second time in three games against Wichita as the Wingnuts won 5-0 Tuesday night behind a eight scoreless innings from newly-acquired pitcher Derek Blacksher.

Blacksher (4-6) was facing the Captains for the second time in a week. Sunday evening the Wingnuts traded star outfielder Ryan Patterson to Ft. Worth in exchange for Blacksher, who won a franchise-record 11 games for Wichita in 2009. While the Captains defeated Blacksher in Ft. Worth, the Texas-born righthander was dominant in his first outing with Wichita this season. Blacksher allowed just two hits and three walks while giving up no runs and striking out six.

The Captains were shutout for the first time all year on Sunday as Wichita starter Chad Sherman threw a complete game two-hitter with 12 strikeouts, setting a Wingnuts franchise record for Ks.

Captains starter Aaron Cunningham (2-7) battled for six innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits while walking one and striking out three. Cunningham allowed a two-run homer to Juan Richardson with two outs in the first inning to give Wichita the lead. The homer was Richardson's second of the series and eighth of the season.

Designated hitter Jose Duran led off the fourth inning with a base hit and came in to score on Mike Conroy's seventh triple of the year. Conroy would score later in the inning on a Richardson single to make it 4-0. Wichita right fielder Josh Workman would add to the lead in the fifth with a solo home run, his second of the series as well.

Cunningham and Jameson Maj would hold the Nuts scoreless over the last three innings, but Blacksher had the Captains' number. Robert Perry, Andres Rodriguez and Mike Provencher had the only three base hits of the game as Shreveport-Bossier had just one runner reach second base and no one reach third. The Captains 5-9 hitters in the lineup went 0-for-14 against Blacksher. Marcos Tabata came in and pitched a scoreless ninth. He gave up a leadoff single to Provencher but, with one out, got Bryan Sabatella to hit into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Wichita has hit eight home runs in the first three games of the series. Shreveport-Bossier has scored in just three of 27 innings in the series and has been held scoreless over their last 14 dating back to the fifth inning Monday night. Richardson went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs in the win. He is 6-for-11 with five RBIs in the series and two home runs. Workman was 3-for-4 with a homer. He is 6-for-13 in the series with two homers and three RBIs.

The Captains fall to 28-29 on the season with the loss. They are 2-8 on the current roadtrip and 7-12 in the first 19 games of their stretch of 20 straight games without an off day. The Captains go for the series split against Wichita in the final game of their season-long road trip Wednesday, July 13 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. Shreveport-Bossier throws lefty Richard Salazar (4-3, 4.97) against Wichita righthander Junior Gerra (3-2, 4.66). Neither pitcher has thrown against the opposing team this year. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
