Pheasants Thrash RedHawks

SIOUX FALLS- One night after recording only one hit against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, the Sioux Falls Pheasants' offense was hoping they would have a different night.
Behind a seven-run second inning capped off by Trevor Lawhorn's grand slam, the Pheasants clobbered the RedHawks 14-1 Tuesday at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Sioux Falls responded to Monday's game with 15 hits, 11 of which came in the first two innings.The Birds matched a season high with four home runs, including two more from Brandon Sing to bring his season total to 21.
"When we start hitting well we just feed off of each other," said Sing. "We just need to make sure that we keep it going."
Sing is six home runs shy of tying and seven home runs shy of breaking his own league record of 27 home runs set in 2010. He has homered in four of the last five games.
The Pheasants made quick work of RedHawks starter Oliver Odle (2-7), who lasted just 1 1/3 innings while giving up seven runs on six hits.
The early runs were more than enough for starter Ben Moore (8-2), who dominated after giving up a leadoff home run to Zach Penprase on the the third pitch of the night. Moore completed six innings but left are taking a line drive to the shoulder in the sixth.
It took just one batter for Sioux Falls to equal their hit output from Monday's game, as Joe Anthonsen led off the bottom of the first with a single. With runners at the corners, Mark Shorey smacked a two-run double before being thrown out trying to advance to third. Sing followed by launching a solo homer off the scoreboard in right center field to increase the Pheasants lead to 3-1.
The Birds broke the game open in the second. After consecutive hits by Hunter Jobes and Kevin Carby, Odle walked Will Richards to load the bases. Lawhorn then cleaned up when his fly ball just cleared the left-field wall. Odle exited with the Pheasants leading 7-1.
Josh Smith relieved Odle and Sioux Falls wasted little time welcoming him to the game. Following a groundout by Reggie Abercrombie, the Birds belted four straight hits, including a two-run bomb by Francisco Leandro to complete the seven-run inning.
"It's exciting to go out there and watch us do something like that tonight," said manager Steve Shirley. "We have the ability to do things like this, so I'm excited, but I'm not surprised."
Sioux Falls added four more runs in the sixth. Mark Shorey hit his third double of the game to drive in Lawhorn, and Sing blasted a three-run shot off of Smith to continue the rout. Smith allowed seven runs on eight hits with four strike outs.
Jesse Hoorelbeke and C.J. Retherford led Fargo-Moorhead with two hits apiece.
The win snapped the Pheasants four-game losing streak, improving their record is 24-32.
The two teams return to the yard for the rubber game of this three-game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, at Sioux Falls Stadium. It is Ladies Night. Ladies of all ages can get in for just $5.
