St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (July 12, 2011) - For the third straight game the St. Paul Saints fell at the hands of the Winnipeg Goldeyes and fell 2.0 games out of first, the furthest out they have been all season, losing 6-1 on Tuesday evening at Midway Stadium in front of 5,014.
With both teams having tired bullpens each starter knew they would be in for long nights and both pitched very well. The Saints jumped out first against Chris Salamida in the first. Adam Frost led off with a single to center. Frost then attempted to steal second, but Salamida looked as though he would pick him off as he threw to first, but Brian Myrow's throw to second went into left field allowing Frost to go all the way to third. With two outs Jason Cooper singled home Frost to make it 1-0. That would be the only blemish on Salamida's evening.
Saints starter Edwin Walker was just as strong, but in the third Price Kendall singled. Kody Kaiser walked and the two moved up on a groundout. Myrow's sacrifice fly tied the game at one.
The Saints had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the inning when they loaded the bases with one out, but Cooper popped out and Brandon Tripp struck out.
In the fifth Brian Joynt led off for the Goldeyes with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kendall. Kaiser knocked home Joynt with a single to center giving the Goldeyes a 2-1 lead.
In the seventh Joynt led off with a solo homer to left, his sixth of the season, making it 3-1.
Walker finished the night going 7.0 innings allowing three runs on 10 hits while walking two and striking out eight while throwing 124 pitches.
Salamida went 6.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while walking three and striking out eight throwing 106 pitches.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series on Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Matt Long (6-4, 4.71) to the mound against Goldeyes LHP Isaac Hess (3-1, 4.25). The game can be heard live through the Saints website at saintsbaseball.com courtesy of the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network and can be heard on a tape delay on Relevant Radio 1330 at 6:00 p.m.
