St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (July 12, 2011) - One of the greatest offensive threats in St. Paul Saints history is coming out of retirement and has signed with the St. Paul Saints. Brent Krause, the all-time leader in nearly every offensive category, will join the club in 2011. They Saints also signed two other local products, infielder Donald Blunt from Augsburg University and right-handed pitcher Kris Edwards from St. Thomas University.

The 29-year-old Krause, from Andover, MN, retired just before the 2011 season, has decided to play and help the club he's spent the last four seasons with. The Saints, who have been decimated by injuries of late and are an outfielder short, welcome him back as the team is in the middle of a first place battle with the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Krause is the Saints career record holder in nearly every major offensive category, but one, home runs. He is 14 dingers shy of David Kennedy's (1994, 97-99) record of 54. He is first in every other category: RBI (211), runs (232), at bats (1274), stolen bases (54), walks (167), games played (339), hits (410), doubles (97), triples (13) and extra base hits (149).

Krause had another All-Star season in 2010, his fourth consecutive with the Saints, hitting .311 with six homers and 55 RBI in 95 games. In 347 at bats he scored 62 runs, had 29 doubles, four triples, stole 13 bases, with an on base percentage of .404 and a slugging percentage of .470. He reached base safely in 23 consecutive games from June 27-July 29.

During his first two seasons with the Saints, 2007 and 2008, Krause had his contract purchased by a Major League organization. In 2007 he had his contract purchased right before the All-Star break by the Baltimore Orioles and played at Single-A Frederick where he hit .275 with five homer and 20 RBI. The following season the Milwaukee Brewers purchased his contract following the American Association season and he played three games at Double-A Huntsville going 3-8 with a double and two RBI.

The 22-year-old Blunt was a standout with Augsburg and in 2011 was the MIAC's leader in home runs with six. He hit .316 with 25 RBI in 33 games. He scored 21 runs, had five doubles, two triples, a team best .600 slugging percentage and a .425 on base percentage. Those numbers earned him All-Conference honors.

The 25-year-old Edwards was a 2011 ABCA NCAA Division III 2nd Team All Midwest Region team and an All-Conference selection this season with St. Thomas. He went 4-5 with a 2.72 ERA and seven saves in 18 games (seven starts). In 72.2 innings pitched he tossed five complete games, two shutouts, struck out 69 and the opposition hit just .214 against him.

To make room the Saints placed outfielder Shane Costa on the inactive list.

The Saints roster stands at the league maximum 22 players, 10 pitchers and 12 position players.
