Hot Rods Game Notes

April 7, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

About Last Night.. The Hot Rods lost their second-straight game, getting shutout for the first time this season in the process on Saturday. Despite a gorgeous day with an incredible turnout (5,087,a sellout) Bowling Green was held to five hits and committed four errors in the field. Michael Plassmeyer turned in an impressive outing, needing just 62 pitches (43 strikes) to carve up six innings of work. He allowed a homer in the fourth to Mariel Bautista, but otherwise left the game unscathed. Dayton added two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a commanding lead, while the Hot Rods couldn't put any offense together in the final innings.

Last Night's Notes... Hot Rods starters have combined for 22 strikeouts

in the first three games of the season... The team has 39 strikeouts as a staff...Plassmeyer had the longest start of his career), also setting a career high in strikeouts...Grant Witherspoon collected his second consecutive multi-hit game...The crowd of 5,087 marks the largest crowd for a Hot Rods home opener since 2012... Bowling Green is below .500 for the first time since April 27, 2018 when the team was 10-11... The Hot Rods are 94-69 all-time against the Dragons, 47-31 at Bowling Green Ballpark...

That's a lot of K's... The Hot Rods got off to a fast start on the mound through the first three games of the season, striking out the Dragons a total of 39 times so far in the series. That total is good for third in all of Class-A baseball behind only the Delmarva Shorebirds (BAL) and Lexington Legends (KC) of the South Atlantic League, both of whom have 40.

Limiting Free Passes... Along with the strikeouts, the club also has the third lowest walk total in A-Ball. The five walks the pitching staff has issued are second only to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the Midwest League (who have just three) and third in Class-A behind the Charleston RiverDogs (SAL, NYY).

Patience is Key... While the pitching staff has limited walks, the batters have accepted them openly. The offense has struggled so far, but are tied for second in the MWL with 16 walks behind Clinton, who has 17. Lake County and Wisconsin also have 16 heading into Sunday

The roster.. The 2019 Hot Rods are a very different club than the 2018 championship team. Wander Franco, the Rays' top prospect in both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America, earned his first full-season assignment while the only other ranked prospect is opening-day starter Shane McClanahan. Chris Betts and Nick Padilla both embark on their second tour with the team, but it's a club with an average age of just over 21 1/2. The youngest member of the team is Franco (18) while the oldest is Cristofer Ogando (25), who was a Rule Five selection from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
