West Michigan's Seven Unanswered Runs Drown Cubs 7-3
April 7, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Cubs News Release
Comstock Park, MI: The South Bend Cubs best start to a season since 2006 was spoiled by the West Michigan Whitecaps this weekend on the road in Comstock Park. After beating Lance Parrish's crew twice to start the campaign, the Cubs dropped Sunday's game by a final of 7-3 to fall to 2-2 to start the season.
Things started well for Buddy Bailey's team on Sunday afternoon, going up 3-0 in the top of the 2nd inning on 20-year-old starter Gio Arriera. Arriera allowed two RBI hits and also threw a wild pitch to surrender the lead. After the scoring burst, South Bend's bats went quiet for the remainder of the day.
After scoring three runs in the bottom of the 5th inning yesterday, West Michigan's big inning scoring continued on Sunday with four runs in the bottom of the 8th to put the Cubs away. Starter Riley Thompson pitched well in his Midwest League debut, going 4.2 innings with three runs allowed and only one of them being earned because of South Bend's three errors.
Thompson exited and Bailey went to his bullpen. Right hander Peyton Remy was the first man into relieve Thompson. Remy, who pitched on Opening Night, tossed a clean 6th and 7th inning but ran into trouble in the 8th.
West Michigan's 8th inning sealed the deal and handed Remy the loss. Nick Ames and Avery Tuck both finished 3/4 for the Whitecaps. At the plate for South Bend, both Levi Jordan and Eric Gonzalez picked up two hits at the bottom of the order.
South Bend's chance at a rally was cut short in the top of the 8th when Tyler Durna smashed a double down the right field line. Durna tried to stretch it into a triple. The relay throw was on time, but when he dove in head first, he appeared to be safe. Durna was called out and the bases were empty once again.
With the loss, the Cubs will pack their bags and head to Midland, Michigan to take on the Great Lakes Loons for the first of four games at Dow Diamond tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. Faustino Carrera will make his South Bend Cubs debut against the Loons.
