Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WIS. - After the Cedar Rapids Kernels mounted a game-tying rally in the top of the sixth inning, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored two unearned runs during the home half of the frame and picked up a 4-2 victory in a six-inning contest that was called early due to rain Sunday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Wisconsin (3-1) tallied its first run during the third. One-out singles by Jesús Lujano and Brent Díaz ultimately gave the Timber Rattlers a pair of runners in scoring position. Yeison Coca followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Lujano and put Wisconsin ahead, 1-0.

The Timber Rattlers added another run in the fifth for a 2-0 advantage. Lujano led off with a walk before stealing second base. He remained at second until Brice Turang brought him home on a two-out single.

Cedar Rapids (1-3) briefly tied the contest early within the sixth inning. A walk for Joe Cronin and a single from Michael Davis set up the top of the Kernels' batting order. Gilberto Celestino and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. delivered back-to-back RBI singles to force a 2-2 tie.

For the second time in as many games, unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth were the difference as Wisconsin regained the lead, 4-2. Chad McClanahan reached on an error and later scored via wild pitch. A two-out error allowed Connor McVey to score a run of his own. The game went into a rain delay after that play, and it was called following a 34-minute stoppage.

Sal Biasi (1-0) was the winning pitcher Sunday afternoon. Biasi relieved Aaron Ashby during the top of the sixth and induced an inning-ending double play.

Joe Record (0-1) yielded two unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning and took the loss within his professional debut. Record, who was selected in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, did not pitch professionally in 2017 or 2018 while coming back from injury. His last appearance in an official game was back on March 4, 2017 for UC Santa Barbara in a loss at Kentucky.

Coming up, Cedar Rapids returns home and begins a four-game series with the Kane County Cougars at 6:35 p.m. Monday night. Kernels right-hander Andrew Cabezas (0-0, -.--) and Cougars right-hander Justin Vernia (0-0, -.--) are the probable pitchers. Broadcast coverage will be available on 1450 KMRY AM and 93.1 KMRY FM and also online at www.kmryradio.com, www.kernels.com, and MiLB.TV.
