
Late Rally Gives 'Caps Win

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to earn their second-straight win in defeating the South Bend Cubs 7-3 Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Six West Michigan batters notched a total of eleven hits, a season-high, while relief pitchers Yaya Chentouf and Drew Crosby tossed a combined 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball while allowing just four baserunners in the win.
The Cubs struck first, plating three runs in the second inning highlighted by an Eric Gonzalez RBI-double to right-center field giving South Bend an early 3-0 lead. Whitecaps first baseman Nick Ames scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom half before right fielder Avery Tuck grounded an RBI-single to left field scoring Johnny Valente and slimming the lead to 3-2. Tuck added another RBI to his total in the fourth inning with an RBI-double to left to score Jeremiah Burks and tie the game at 3-3. The game remained tied at three until the eighth, when Johnny Valente roped a two-run single to left field propelling the "Caps to a four-run inning and a 7-3 win over the Cubs.
Whitecaps relief pitcher Yaya Chentouf (1-0) tossed two innings of scoreless baseball with two strikeouts for his first win of 2019, while Cubs starting pitcher Peyton Remy (0-1) pitched 4.2 innings while allowing three runs on six hits and four strikeouts in his first loss. The Whitecaps improve back to an even 2-2, while the Cubs, who took the first two games of this four-game, home-and-home series, fall to 2-2 as well. Ames and Tuck led the offense with three hits apiece, while Valente added two singles, two runs and two RBI in the victory.

The Whitecaps hit the road for a four-game series against the in-state rival Lansing Lugnuts beginning on Monday from Cooley Law School Stadium at 6:05 pm.
