Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Burlington, IA- The Quad Cities River Bandits surrendered three home runs on Sunday afternoon, leading to a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the Burlington Bees at Community Field. Burlington took three of the four games in the season-opening set.
It was the River Bandits who tallied first in the matinee. Scott Schreiber broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning by blasting a two-run home run over the wall in right center for a 2-0 lead. He hit the long ball off of his former teammate at Nebraska Luis Alvarado. Schreiber was the only Bandit with more than one hit, finishing 2-4.
Bandits starting pitcher Brett Conine was sharp through four innings, allowing just one hit. In the fifth, however, Burlington jumped ahead. Gleyvin Pineda opened the frame with a solo home run to right to cut the deficit in half. After singles by Michael Stefanic and Jordyn Adams, Livan Soto turned on a fastball and launched a go-ahead three-run home run to make it 4-2 Bees.
Quad Cities pulled closer in the seventh inning against the Burlington bullpen. David Hensley worked a leadoff walk against reliever Connor Higgins and Jeremy Pena followed with an infield single to put two on with one out. Enmanuel Valdez rolled a sharp single into right field to plate Hensley, by rounded first too far and was tagged out in a rundown for the inning's second out. Despite putting men on base in every ensuing inning, the Bandits could not score again.
Del Valle, Stefanic and Pineda each finished with two-hit games for Burlington.
Conine and Matt Ruppenthal combined to strike out 14 Burlington hitters. Conine allowed four runs on five hits in 5.0 innings and struck out nine. Ruppenthal allowed one run on three hits and collected the other five whiffs.
All River Bandits games are broadcast on 1170 K-BOB and TuneIn Radio. Home games are also available with video on MiLB.TV.
