Kane County Cougars News Release
CLINTON, Iowa - Alex King's two-out, three-run homer in top of the eighth inning powered the Kane County Cougars (2-2) to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Clinton LumberKings (2-2) on Sunday afternoon. The win secured a series split in the Cougars season-opening four-game series.
Clinton took control of the game early. With one out in the second, Sean Reynolds walked. He stole second base and came in to score on Bubba Hollins' two-out single to make it 1-0 LumberKings. In the fifth, Clinton's Jerar Encarnacion continued his torrid series with an RBI single to centerfield, pushing the Clinton lead to 2-0. Encarnacion finished the four games versus the Cougars 8-for-14 at the plate with three RBI and three multi-hit games.
In the sixth, the Cougars slashed in to the deficit. Eduardo Diaz was hit by a pitch leading off the inning. With two outs, Geraldo Perdomo doubled to centerfield to score Diaz. Clinton got that run right back with a tally in the bottom of the seventh when Encarnacion singled home Demetrius Sims.
In the eighth, Geraldo Perdomo and L.T. Tolbert singled with one out. After a Tra Holmes strikeout, Alex King came to the plate and blasted the first pitch he saw over the left field fence. It was King's first homer as a Cougar and the team's first multi-run inning in the first four games.
King's homer took Cougar starter Franklyn Soriano off the hook for the loss. The southpaw went 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Ethan Larrison surrendered one run in his two innings of relief. Chester Pimentel (1-0) earned the win by recording the final seven outs of the game without allowing a run. Clinton's Tyler Jones (0-1) was on the mound when King's homer sailed out, handing Jones a blown save and loss.
The Cougars stay on the road for the start of a four-game series at Cedar Rapids. Cougar right-hander Justin Vernia (0-0, 0.00) is scheduled to duel with Kernels' starting pitcher Andrew Cabezas on Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Follow the action live with Joe Brand on AM 1280 WBIG or on kccougars.com.
