September 4, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - On the back of three home runs the Florence Freedom snapped a three game losing streak with a 7-4 win over the Washington Wild Things Friday night.
Ryan Basham went 3-4 for Florence and took one deep for the second straight night. Basham clubbed his sixteenth of the season in the Freedom's third inning with two aboard to put Florence on top 3-2.
Tim Grogan singled with two outs to bring in the fourth Freedom run in the third inning.
In the fourth, Jay Johnson, 5, and Justin Pickett, 24, went back-to-back to stretch out the Freedom's lead to 6-2.
Chuck Tiffany's only hiccups came against Washington's Jacob Dempsey. Florence's starter gave up a two-run shot to Dempsey in the first and solo blast to the designated hitter in the fourth. The two homers were his 30th and 31st of the season. The Frontier League leader in RBIs (94) also found out earlier in the day he was named to the All-Frontier League team as the designated hitter.
Tiffany (5-2) still managed to pick up the win for the Freedom, going six innings and allowing four runs.
Former Freedom pitcher Chris Ingoglia (6-9) failed to make it past the fourth inning for Washington. The Freedom strung six straight hits together against the left-hander in the four run third and he left in the fourth after allowing six runs on 11 hits.
Florence's bullpen continued its dominance Friday night. Ben Shivers tossed two scoreless innings giving way to Jonathan Miller as he struck out two in the ninth to pick up his fourteenth save. Miller is now tied with Kalamazoo's Tommy Mejia for second in saves this season in the Frontier League.
The Freedom (48-46) assured themselves a .500 season with the victory. Game two of series will be on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. with Everett Saul going for his thirteenth win of the season for Florence.
