Gateway Grizzlies News Release
EVANSVILLE, IND.- Brandon Peters homered twice and drove in a career-high five runs Friday night to lead the Gateway Grizzlies past the Evansville Otters 10-9 at Bosse Field in the opener of the final three-game series of the year.
The win is the third straight for the Grizzlies (40-54). Evansville (28-66) has dropped a club-record 13 consecutive games.
Peters led off the game with his 10th home run of the year, taking Evansville starter Stephen Brock's first pitch of the game over the right field wall to put the Grizzlies up 1-0.
Evansville answered with a three-run first inning against Grizzlies starter Paige Dumont. Dumont settled in to pitch six innings. He gave up six runs, though only three were earned. He struck out three and did not get a decision.
Joseph Scaperotta tied the game for the Grizzlies in the third with a two-run double, scoring Peters, who had walked, and Lape who singled, to lead off the inning. Gateway then took the lead on a Brandon Johnson homer leading off the fourth. The Grizzlies would extend the lead to 6-3 in the sixth. Alex Kerins singled to start the inning and went to second on a wild pitch. Johnson sacrificed Kerins to third. Kerins scored on another wild pitch. Lape singled with two outs, and scored on a double by Peters.
Evansville evened the score with three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. Eric Ridener relieved Dumont in the seventh and gave up a pair of runs on two hits that put Evansville back on top 8-6. Ridener (1-2) earned the win despite the runs allowed.
After consecutive one-out singles by Johnson and Jonathan Quigley in the eighth, Peters launched a two-out drive to the right-center field gap for his 11th homer of the year, putting the Grizzlies up 9-8. Scaperotta led off the ninth with his 22nd homer of the year that made it 10-8. Scaperotta finished 2-5 with three RBIs.
Evansville managed a run in the bottom of the ninth against Grizzlies reliever Collin Brennan. Boeschen relieved Brennan and got out of a bases loaded, two-out jam to earn his team-leading 10th save of the year.
The Grizzlies and Otters continue the series Saturday night with a 7:05 game at Bosse Field.
