Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Frontier League has announced its annual post-season awards, and outfielder Joey Metropoulos has become the first league MVP in Southern Illinois Miners team history. Metropoulos also joins shortstop Tony Roth on the league's annual post-season all-star team. In addition, Southern Illinois was voted Frontier League Organization of the Year for the second time in the franchise's three-year history, and The Southern Illinoisan also took home Frontier League Newspaper of the Year honors.
This marks the first time two Miners have made the post-season all-star team in the same season. Metropoulos has been named to the post-season all-star team for two consecutive years. He has become the first Miner to be named to the team more than once.
"It's a tremendous honor to be recognized as the MVP of a league with so many quality players," Metropoulos said. "It reflects how special we have been as a team this year because without my teammates, this would not be possible. I give so much credit to our coaching staff and the countless hours they worked with me."
The all-star team and post-season player awards were voted on by Frontier League general managers, field managers, coaching staffs, radio broadcasters and local media. Organization of the Year and Newspaper of the Year were only voted by general managers and coaches.
"It's a great honor to be named the best organization in the league a second time," Miners General Manager Tim Arseneau said. "It's rewarding to see the hard work of everyone here at the ballpark recognized."
Tonight the Miners are at home to battle River City for first place. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with post-game Fantastic Friday Night Fireworks, sponsored by WPSD Local 6 and River Radio. For tickets and the latest Miners news, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
