Evansville Otters News Release

EVANSVILLE, IN - In one of the most electric games of the year, the Otters were nipped by the Gateway Grizzlies 10-9 Friday at Bose Field.

The Otters took an 8-6 lead into the top of the eighth inning looking to break a 12 game losing streak. Manager Wayne Krenchicki, taking no chances, called on closer Ben Paxton for a six out save. Paxton, with a 0.23 ERA, had not allowed an earned run in his last 35 1/3 innings. After giving up a pair of one out singles, Paxton got Nate Lape to fly out to right field for the second out. Leadoff man Brandon Peters was next, and belted a three-run homer over the right field fence to put the Grizzlies up 9-8. Peters finished 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI.

Grizzlies' left fielder Joseph Scaperotta added a solo shot off of Paxton to lead off the ninth inning to extend the lead to 10-8. Paxton would be removed with two outs in the ninth, giving up four runs (all earned) on five hits. His ERA now stands at 1.12.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Otters were down, but not out. Andre Liscinsky and Kenny Gilbert led off the frame with walks, putting the tying runs on base. After Greg Alexander flew out, Frank Meade brought the Otters within one with an RBI single. Meade finished 3-for-4 with four RBI. Gilbert took third on the hit and represented the tying run with one out. Luke Hetherington struck out and Cameron Satterwhite walked to load the bases with two outs. With the Otters trailing by one, Travis McCleary grounded out to second base to end the game.

Paxton (1-1) took the loss, while Eric Ridener (1-2) earned the victory in relief. Joel Boeschen staved off the Otters rally for his tenth save. Evansville has now lost thirteen in a row. They will attempt to stop the slide Saturday at 7:05pm CDT against the Grizzlies. Curtis Bryant Director of Broadcasting/Media Relations Evansville Otters Baseball
