
Beach Bums dropped by Kalamazoo

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums opened the final series of the season by dropping a 9-6 decision to the Kalamazoo Kings at Wuerfel Park on Friday night.
Kalamazoo greeted David Nathanson rudely by scoring three times in the first inning. Tim Brown connected on a one-put three-run homer after Brandon Anderson doubled and Joe Ramos singled to begin the game. The Kings had five hits in the first inning.
Traverse City began to rally in the second inning. With two outs Andrew Barbaro drew a walk and Robby Alcombrack followed with a single. Jorge Araiza doubled in a run to knock in his first run with the Beach Bums on his first extra-base hit. The Beach Bums tied the game in the fourth with two outs. Robby Alcombrack and Jorge Araiza each singled before Mike Epping tripled them in. Brian Lapin scored a run in the fifth after doubling to put Traverse City ahead 4-3.
The lead was short as the Kings scored twice in the sixth to grab a 5-4 edge. Tim Brown singled and scored on a triple by Amos Ramon. Ramon crossed the plate when Matt Maloney lifted a sacrifice fly. Traverse City tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Mike Epping posted a bunt single with one out. Epping scored from second on a single by Michael Campbell.
The Kings scored four unanswered to take control of the game. Tim Brown hit his second homer of the game in the seventh inning off of B.J. Hagen to put the Kings ahead and Kalamazoo added two more in the eighth on run scoring hits by Matt Maloney and Michael Graves. Hagen was hit with the defeat. Traverse City accounted for the final margin in the ninth inning when following a triple by Brian Lapin, Andrew Franco singled.
The Beach Bums posted 12 hits in the contest, the highest single game total of the homestand, but left 10 men on base. Brian Lapin had three hits, falling a homer shy of the cycle. Robby Alcombrack, Jorge Araiza, Mike Epping, and Andrew Franco added two hits apiece.
The Beach Bums will continue the series tomorrow night when RHP David Dinelli (3-5, 6.80) takes to the hill opposite RHP Bernard Robert (6-6, 4.33) in a 7:05pm tilt. Robert is 3-0 against the Beach Bums this season. It will be College Spirit Night at Wuerfel Park with fans dressing in college gear receiving discounted admission. Kalamazoo had its magic number to clinch the East Division title shrink to one.
