The Frontier League came out with their post-season awards. Paul Fagan was honored as the Brian Tolberg Most Valuable Pitcher and Gordon Gronkowski was named the recipient of the Fran Riordan Citizenship Award. Fagan and Andrew Davis were also named All-Stars for their respective positions. The league's official release is below:
The Frontier League Office is proud to announce this year's post-season award winners and All-Star Team.
The Morgan Burkhart Most Valuable Player Award goes to Joey Metropoulos of the Southern Illinois Miners. Metropoulos is in his third season with the Miners. He is currently leading the Frontier League with 30 home runs, only the third player to reach that plateau in League history. A pure power hitter, Metropoulos has also hit for average in 2009, currently batting at a .315 clip.
Paul Fagan of the Lake Erie Crushers is the recipient of the Brian Tollberg Most Valuable Pitcher Award. Fagan, who started his professional career in the Mariners' organization, currently leads the Frontier League with 14 wins and is second in the League in innings pitched with 136.0.
The Jason Simontacchi Rookie of the Year Award is given annually to the most outstanding player with no previous professional experience. This year's winner is Windy City outfielder Vinnie Scarduzio. Scarduzio, a fine defensive outfielder, is currently hitting .272 with 16 home runs and 47 RBIs.
The Rogers Hanners Manager of the Year is Chad Parker of the River City Rascals, who are currently in first place in the West Division. Parker, in his first year as a skipper in the Frontier League, has guided the Rascals to more wins than they have posted in any season since joining the League in 1999.
The Fran Riordan Citizenship Award goes to Lake Erie's Gordon Gronkowski. Gronkowski, known as "The Mayor" of All Pro Freight Stadium, stays long after games, win or lose, to sign autographs and talk with fans. He has also been a leader in the Crushers' community initiatives, especially when it comes to speaking to local groups.
The Organization of the Year is awarded to the Southern Illinois Miners and the Executive of the Year Award goes to Kari Rumfield, General Manager for the Florence Freedom.
