BINGHAMTON, NY - Brad Holt tossed seven shutout innings, but Adam Calderone's two-run homerun off Eric Niesen in the ninth inning was the decisive blow, giving the Fisher Cats a 2-1 win at NYSEG Stadium tonight.
Strong starting pitching was front and center in the B-Mets second home game of the season as Holt and Fisher Cats' starter Chad Beck both cruised through seven innings unscathed.
Holt, coming off a strong outing in his first start against Akron last week, gave up two singles in the first two innings but did not allow another hit until Jonathan Diaz's double in the sixth.
In his Double-A debut, Peck was efficient in eight innings of one-run baseball. The right-hander gave up a single to Jesus Feliciano to lead off the first and then shut the B-Mets offense down. Peck proceeded to retire 20 of the next 21 batters he faced, with a Craig Stansberry fielding error as the only blemish.
The Fisher Cats came within inches of drawing first blood in the top of the sixth. Jonathan Diaz followed his one-out double by advancing to third on a groundout. With two outs, Holt's first pitch to Mike McDade bounced in front of the plate, squeaked behind catcher Kai Gronauer, and ricocheted off the right leg of home plate umpire Andy Dudones. Diaz immediately broke for the plate while Gronauer tracked down the ball which lay motionless 15 feet from homeplate. The catcher collected it, dove headfirst back to plate, and applied a tag on Diaz before he could score.
With the contest scoreless in the seventh, Holt found himself in his second jam of the game. After Mike McDade singled and Travis d'Arnaud walked, New Hampshire had two runners aboard with one out. Moises Sierra's chopper to the left side was intercepted by third baseman Eric Campbell who made a backhand flip to Josh Satin at second to retire d'Arnaud.
Holt got ahead Yan Gomes with a 0-2 count before a breaking ball bounced away from Gronauer and allowed Sierra to get to second. The B-Mets pitcher rebounded on the very next offering, getting Gomes to chase a pitch outside the zone to end the threat.
After Erik Turgeon worked a perfect top half of the eighth, the B-Mets' scoring in the bottom half of the frame was quick and powerful. With one out, Brahiam Maldonado was ahead in the count 2-0 and crushed the next pitch he saw from Beck off the message board beyond the left field fence for his third homerun of the season.
Eric Niesen was called upon to close the door for the B-Mets in the ninth. Things got off to a rocky start as he walked leadoff batter Anthony Gose after the speedy centerfielder worked out a full count. McDade followed with a chopper to short that had double play potential. Jordany Valdespin fielded cleanly and stepped on second, but his off-balance throw to first pulled Mike Fisher off the bag and allowed McDade to reach safely.
New Hampshire manager Sal Fasano sent out John Tolisano to pinch run as Adam Calderone stepped to the plate as the go-ahead run. The left-handed hitting outfielder connected on the first pitch he saw and sent it over the right field wall to give the Fisher Cats a 2-1 lead.
Ronald Uviedo came on to pitch the ninth and made the lead stand, earning his first save of the season with a perfect frame.
The B-Mets (2-6) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (5-4) for the third game of a four-game series. LHP Robert Carson (0-1, 0.00) will start for the B-Mets and RHP Joel Carreno (0-1, 9.45) will go for the Fisher Cats with first pitch scheduled for 1:05pm.
