New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Steve Singleton's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth ended a superbly pitched game and enabled the Rock Cats to defeat Portland, 2-1, today at New Britain Stadium. The victory extended New Britain's current winning streak to six, and solidified the Connecticut club's hold on 1st Place in the Eastern League's East Division.

Today's second home game of year in New Britain was witnessed by a mid-day Sellout gathering of 6,781 fans.

Portland's starter was 21-year-old righty Stolmy Pimentel, one of the Boston organization's most prized pitching prospects. He surrendered just two harmless hits in the outing, departing after five shutout innings. He left with a 1-0 lead, courtesy of teammate Ryan Lavarnway's 4th-inning RBI single off the New Britain starter, Steve Hirschfeld. Lavarnway is a former Yale Bulldog.

The Rock Cats tied the game in the 8th-inning when the Portland bullpen surrendered a 2-out RBI Double to New Britain's Chris Parmelee. Parmelee's two-bagger plated Mark Dolenc who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the frame by Sea Dogs' reliever and eventual loser, Blake Maxwell.

With the scored tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 9th, the Rock Cats got two singles to place runners at 1st and 3rd with two outs. The left-handed swinging Singleton then stroked a line drive into right-field, easily scoring Yangervis Solarte with the winning run.

Tyler Robertson (1-0) got the Win for New Britain after coming out of the Rock Cats' bullpen and throwing a scoreless ninth. With the Loss, Maxwell's record fell to 0-1.
