CURVE, Pa. - Richmond scored two runs early and added on three more runs late in the game to defeat the Curve, 5-2, on Friday night at Blair County Ballpark. Tony Sanchez went 2-for-3 in the loss for the Curve.
The Squirrels jumped on the scoreboard first in the first off of starter Jared Hughes (0-1) when Mike McBryde scored on a Jose Flores double-play ball after reaching on an error by Hughes to start the game. Richmond also plated a run in the second when Johnny Monell drove in Roger Kieschnick with a single.
Trailing, 2-0, Altoona pulled to within a run in the third when Miles Durham singled into left field and brought Brock Holt home from third to make it 2-1. Shelby Ford, who walked and was standing on second, was waived in and then collided with Monell at the plate. Monell held on and Ford was called out to end the inning.
The game stayed at 2-1 through the fifth as Hughes completed five innings and allowed the two runs (one earned) on five hits. Richmond widened its lead in the sixth off reliever Tim Alderson when they plated two runs thanks to sacrifice flies by Juan Perez and Joel Weeks.
Altoona got one of those two runs back in the seventh when Brad Chalk hit a sacrifice fly to right that brought Quincy Latimore home. On the same play, Jeremy Farrell tried to advance to second base but was thrown out as the catcher Monell fired down to second to just barely get Farrell.
Richmond tallied the game's final run in the eighth with another sacrifice fly, this time by the catcher Monell.
The Curve actually out-hit the Squirrels, 9-7, and each starting position player had a hit in the game.
Looking to take a series lead, Altoona (4-5) will meet the Squirrels (5-4) in game three of the four-game series at 6 p.m. on Saturday night at BCB. A postgame fireworks show will follow Saturday night's game with Richmond and fans are encouraged to bring toddler winter wear to benefit the Family Resource Center's Toasty Toddlers Program on the first Community Collection Saturday of the season. Kids can also run the bases after the game.
RHP Aaron Pribanic (0-0, 4.50) will make the Game 3 start for the Curve while LHP Clayton Tanner (0-1, 7.20) tosses for the Squirrels.
Gates for the 6 p.m. contest will open at 5 p.m. Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve radio network is set for 5:30 p.m.
