Hitmen Defenceman Jake Bean Named WHL Eastern Conference Most Sportsmanlike Player
March 23, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club would like to congratulate teammates Jake Bean and Travis Sanheim on their Western Hockey League awards. Today the league announced Bean is the WHL Eastern Conference Most Sportsmanlike Player. He is now up for the Brad Hornung Trophy, presented to the league's Most Sportsmanlike Player at the WHL Awards Luncheon on May 4 in Calgary. Bean, along with fellow Hitmen defenceman Travis Sanheim, was also named to the Eastern Conference Second All-Star Team.
Both Bean and Sanheim had terrific regular seasons for the Hitmen. Not only were they co-winners of the club's Tommy Gun's Original Barbershop Top Defenceman Award but they were also two of the top 10 scoring defencemen in the WHL. Sanheim (15g, 53a) had 68 points to sit fourth among all defencemen while Bean's (24g, 40a) 64 points were sixth. Bean's career-high 24 goals led all defencemen while his 12 power play goals were tied for top spot among blueliners. Sanheim's 53 assists tied for second among defenders.
Twice in franchise history a Hitmen player has been named the WHL's Most Sportsmanlike Player. On both occasions Matt Kinch captured the award, first in the 1998-99 season and again in 2000-01.
The Hitmen will open the 2016 WHL Playoffs this weekend with Games 1 and 2 in Red Deer on Friday, March 25 and Saturday, March 26.
The best-of-seven series then shifts back to Calgary for Game 3 at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday, March 27 at 4:00 p.m. TELUS Fan Banners will be given to the first 5,000 people upon entry. Fans are also encouraged to post a picture on social media using #AllHeartHitmen for the chance to win TELUS prizes.
Tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster and the Scotiabank Saddledome box office. Single game playoff tickets can also be ordered online at Ticketmaster.ca or by phone at 1-855-985-5000.
