March 23, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
EDMONTON, ALTA. - The Edmonton Oil Kings have secured their sixth straight postseason berth with a win in the sudden death tiebreaker game Tuesday in Medicine Hat against the Tigers.
Both the Oil Kings and Tigers finished tied for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with 65 points. As per the WHL format, there was a one game winner-take-all tiebreaker where Edmonton beat Medicine Hat in a thrilling 6-4 decision.
This is the second time the Oil Kings have had a tiebreaker game to see who advanced to the playoffs. Back in 2009 they had to travel to Prince Albert for the game where they won 2-1 in overtime.
Last night's game is just the sixth tiebreaker game to have taken place in the WHL.
The Oil Kings take to the ice Thursday March 24 when they face off for Game 1 in Brandon vs the Wheat Kings. Game is at 6:30pm MT. Edmonton returns home for playoff action at Rexall Place with Games 3 and 4 on Wednesday March 30 and Thursday March 31 at 7pm MT. For tickets and information please visit oilkings.ca.
