Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
St. Paul, MN - Stephen Hiscock got all the support he needed in the fourth inning as the RailCats defeated St. Paul 6-0 on Saturday night. The 'Cats improved to 52-39 with the win and kept their lead at 1.5 games in the wild card. St. Paul dropped to 45-47 on the season.
Hiscock struck out a career-high 10 batters and was removed after eight innings of shutout baseball. Stephen picked up his third win of the season and surrendered just four hits and a pair of walks in the game.
The RailCats jumped on the board first when they loaded the bases in the top of the first inning. Cristian Guerrero singled off the glove of the first baseman to score Adam Klein and take a 1-0 lead for the 'Cats.
In the fourth, the RailCats took advantage of a dropped pop up in foul ground by the catcher Jeremy Mayo. Brian Kolb punched a base hit down the right field line with two outs and Drew Martinez was hit by a pitch. Zac Mitchell then pulled a triple down the left field line to score both Kolb and Martinez. Nick Liles drew a four-pitch walk and Adam Klein knocked in two more with a double to make it 5-0 'Cats.
All four runs in the inning went unearned against starter Mark Hamburger.
In the bottom of the fourth, Brandon Tripp thought he was hit by Stephen Hiscock but it was ruled a foul ball of the knob of his bat. Tripp struck out in the at-bat and was ejected after saying something to the home plate umpire immediately after his swing and miss.
During the inning, Drew Martinez removed himself from the ball game; perhaps feeling the affects of being hit by a pitch in the top of the fourth.
With two outs in the sixth, Adam Klein and Mike Massaro hit back-to-back doubles to make it 6-0 RailCats.
Saints starter Mark Hamburger took his seventh loss of the season. He allowed six runs, two earned, on nine hits and five walks and struck out seven.
Adam Klein went 4-for-4 in the game with a walk, a pair of runs scored and two driven in. It was his first four hit game of the season.
The RailCats complete their three-game series with the Saints on Sunday afternoon. The Saints will send RHP Billy Soule (3-1, 7.78 ERA) the RailCats send LHP Alain Quijano (10-7, 4.32 ERA).
