Hamburger Sets Single-Season Strikeout Mark, But Saints Shutout Again 6-0

ST. PAUL, MN - St. Paul Saints starter Mark Hamburger etched his name at the top of the Saints record book in two different categories on Saturday night, the single-season strikeout mark and innings pitched. That is where the accolades ended for the Saints who were shutout for the fourth time in five games, 6-0 to the Gary SouthShore Railcats on Saturday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,602.

Hamburger started the night needing four strikeouts to top Jake Whitney's single-season record of 111 set in 2002. He struck out one in the second and in the fourth he struck out the first two hitters he faced. Unfortunately, after that Brian Kolb's pop up in foul territory was dropped by catcher Jeremy Mayo. That opened the floodgates for the Railcats. Kolb would double and Drew Martinez was hit by a pitch. Zac Mitchell tripled in both runs to give the Railcats a 3-0 lead. After a walk to Nick Liles, Adam Klein made it 5-0 with a two-run triple. Hamburger finally got the record when he struck out Mike Massaro to end the inning.

The other single-season record to fall was most innings pitched in a season. Hamburger needed 5.2 innings pitched to top Robert Coe's mark of 139.1 set last year. Hamburger did that by finishing 6.0 innings. He allowed six runs (two earned) on nine hits while walking a season tying high five and striking out seven. He now has 140.0 innings pitched and 118 strikeouts on the season.

The Saints offense provided little to be excited about as they were blanked once again on just four hits. They managed four singles from Andy Henkemeyer in the third, Brian Burgamy in the sixth, Trevor Hairgrove in the seventh and Dan Kaczrowski in the eighth. Two of the four hits by the Saints were infield singles.

The closest the Saints came to scoring was in the fifth when they loaded the bases without a hit. Joey Becker walked. With two outs Jeremy Mayo walked and Henkemeyer reached on an error by second baseman Nick Liles. Kaczrowski, however, flew out to center to end the inning.

Railcats starter Stepehen Hiscock tossed 8.0 scoreless innings allowing four hits while walking two and striking out 10.

The Saints lost for a season tying high fifth straight time, all at home, and have now been shutout 10 times this season.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Billy Soule (3-1, 7.79) to the mound against Railcats RHP Alain Quijano (10-7, 4.32). It is DIY Day. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
