Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS - A sellout crowd turned out for the second consecutive night at Sioux Falls Stadium, but the Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Sioux Falls Canaries with an 11-3 victory.

The Goldeyes remained 1 1/2 games behind Gary SouthShore in the wildcard race while clinching the three-game series before 4,656 fans at the Birdcage.

Josh Mazzola opened the game's scoring with an RBI single in the top of the second inning, and Casey Haerther made it 2-0 while grounding into a double play. Winnipeg (51-41) led the entire way after that, piling up nine more runs in the middle three innings.

Canaries starter Adam Champion (6-10) was roughed up for the loss, allowing a season-high 11 runs and 13 hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out two.

The Canaries (38-54) had no trouble putting runners on base with 14 hits, but they stranded 15 men, including 10 in scoring position. Every man in the lineup had a least one hit. Reggie Abercrombie, J.P. Ramirez, Marcos Rodriguez and Anthony Trajano all had multi-hit nights.

For Winnipeg, Haerther was 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Despite giving up nine hits, Chris Salamida (6-0) held the Canaries to one run in six innings to notch his sixth win in seven starts. He walked one and struck out two.

The finale of the series is at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, at Sioux Falls Stadium. It's Family Funday. Kids run the bases after the game and players will sign postgame autographs. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN 1230-AM, 98.1-FM and www.kwsn.com.
