St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints broke a three game scoreless streak on Friday night against the Gary SouthShore RailCats, but the six runs they managed weren't enough as Gary came from behind to beat them 12-6 in front of 6,012 at Midway Stadium. The RailCats scored multiple runs in four innings to jump in front early, come from behind, and then pull away late.

The RailCats scored two runs in both the second and third innings to cruise to an early 4-0 advantage. In inning number two Reid Fronk and Cristian Guerrero scored on a two RBI single by nine-hitter Danny Pulfer to start the high scoring affair. One inning later, Brian Kolb led off with a single, stole second, and then came in to score on a single by Fronk. Fronk stole both second and third bases, scoring when Saints catcher Jeremy Mayo's throw sailed over the head of Joey Becker and into left field. The Railcats stole six stolen bases, the most allowed by the Saints this season.

The RailCats tacked on another in the top of the fourth before the Saints finally broke their prolonged scoreless streak with two runs in the bottom half. With Willie Cabrera and Becker aboard Mayo ripped a two out single to cut the lead to 5-2. The runs broke a 30-inning scoreless streak that extended back to the first inning of Tuesday night's game.

The Saints racked up three more in the fifth, with the big knock coming on an RBI double by Brian Burgamy. Fielder's choices by Cabrera and Becker scored the final two runs of the frame tying the game at five.

Burgamy looked to give the Saints the lead in the bottom of the seventh when he hit a fly ball to left that kept carrying, but leftfielder Adam Klein leaped up and robbed Burgamy of a homer. On the very next pitch Cabrera hit a ball Klein couldn't catch, driving a pitch from Estevan Uriegas over the wall in left to give the Saints a 6-5 advantage. Cabrera finished his night 2-4 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored.

The lead was short-lived however, when Gary responded with four runs in the eight and three more in the ninth off of Mikey Mehlich and Kyle Morrison respectively. All four pitchers that took the ball for the Saints allowed at least one run. Starter Cole Nelson lasted just 3.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

The Saints and RailCats do battle again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Saints call on RHP Mark Hamburger (6-6, 3.29), while the RailCats counter with RHP Stephen Hiscock (2-2, 3.75). The Saints will induct another member into the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame with the help of Killebrew Root Beer. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM or in the park on 87.9 FM.
