Hershey Bears News Release
The Hershey Bears Hockey Club picked up five out of a possible six points in last week's games to move into third place in the Atlantic Division.
On Wednesday, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers hosted the Bears in their annual school day matinee, an 11:00 AM faceoff at Webster Bank Arena. Goaltender Justin Peters thwarted a high-powered attack by the Sound Tigers in making a season-high 39 saves, and Paul Carey scored a pair of goals to pace the Bears to a 4-2 victory. Bracken Kearns gave Bridgeport an early 1-0 lead with a two-man-advantage power play goal, but Carey answered late in the first period to knot the score. Connor Carrick's second of the season put Hershey in front in the middle frame, and the Bears held their first edge until midway through the third when Alan Quine tied things up. Carey's second of the contest was a long-range slap shot that sailed past Sound Tigers goalie Christopher Gibson for the eventual winner. Gibson would later misplay a puck behind his net, and Nathan Walker would have an empty net into which he deposited the insurance goal just 1:16 later.
The Bears visited Allentown's PPL Center for the first time this season on Friday for a rematch against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms - winners of a 5- 4 shootout decision five days earlier in Chocolatetown. The Bears allowed the opening goal once more, an Aaron Palushaj deflection that eluded goaltender Dan Ellis 7:58 into the game. Ellis would settle in and make key saves, including a breakaway by Kevin Goumas, and end up with 20 stops in another 4-2 Hershey victory. Stan Galiev scored in his first game of a conditioning loan from Washington, tying the game in the first period with a slapper that beat Phantoms netminder Jason LaBarbera. Walker got his second goal in as many games by scoring on a breakaway in the second period. Carter Camper's deflection of a Ryan Stanton shot 1:03 into the third found the net for the eventual game-winner. Tyrell Goulbourne brought the Phantoms within one goal, but Chris Bourque capped off the night with an empty-net tally inside the final minute of play.
A wild rematch against the St. John's IceCaps on Sunday saw the Bears storm out to a 3-0 first-period lead on two goals from Galiev and one from Sean Collins. But the IceCaps got goals from Brett Lernout, Morgan Ellis and Daniel Carr to force overtime. The Bears dominated the extra five minutes, outshooting St. John's 4-1, but a shootout would follow. Galiev extended the shootout with a last-chance goal in the third round, but after Collins was stopped by goalie Zach Fucale, Gabriel Dumont used a near- stop move to get a shot past Peters and give the IceCaps a 4-3 victory.
HERSHEY BEARS NEWS AND NOTES
BOURQUE & THE BEARS BEST: Chris Bourque's three-point week (1-2-3) has added to an incredible Hershey Bears career point total. STAN THE MAN IS BACK: RW Stan Galiev was reassigned for conditioning on Friday and made his impact in the Hershey lineup immediately felt that night at Lehigh Valley. He tallied the tying goal in the first period, and burst out of the gate with two first-period goals and one in the shootout in earning first-star honors on Saturday vs. St. John's. Galiev led the AHL last season in power- play goals (15) and first-goals (10).
