ST. JOHN'S, NL - The Hershey Bears shut out the St. John's IceCaps 4-0 Saturday night at Mile One Centre, securing a series split after falling to St. John's on Friday.
Peter LeBlanc scored what stood to be the game-winner for the Bears and Dmitry Orlov added a goal and and two assists. Derek Whitmore and Casey Wellman picked up the other tallies for the Bears, while Philipp Grubauer kicked aside 30 shots to pick up Hershey's first win of the season.
Eddie Pasquale stopped 21 shots in a losing effort for the IceCaps, and Kael Mouillierat led St. John's with four shots on goal.
The Bears jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Peter LeBlanc put his team ahead at the quarter-mark of the opening frame. LeBlanc waltzed into the IceCaps zone after a great lead pass by Orlov, before wiring a wrist shot past Pasquale that eluded him on the blocker side.
With the Bears on the power play in the second period, former IceCap Whitmore extended Hershey's lead to two at 4:52. Whitmore was sprung on the rush with a feed from Jeff Taffe and roofed one upstairs by finding an opening above Pasquale's right shoulder.
After an IceCaps scoring chance quickly transitioned into a three-on-two rush the other way, Bears rearguard Orlov notched his first of the season with under two minutes left in the second frame by one-timing a cross-ice pass from Ryan Stoa past Pasquale.
Hershey picked up where they left off in the third period, as Casey Wellman made it 4-0 at 6:17 when Orlov set him up on a two-on-one rush before sneaking one between the legs of Pasquale.
Saturday's game marked the end of the IceCaps' brief homestand, as the club begins a six-game road trip next weekend with back-to-back tilts against the Manchester Monarchs.
