Hens Win Thriller After Dramatic Eighth Inning
May 26, 2023 - International League (IL)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Rochester Red Wings 3-2 on Friday night at Fifth Third Field. It marks the Hen's first win of the series and their first win since Saturday, May 20th against the Storm Chasers.
Reese Olson started the game for the Hens and was completely in control through five innings. His final stat line was 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 10 K. The only run he gave up came from one swing off the bat of former Mud Hen Derek Hill, who hit a solo home run to lead off the third inning against Olson. He exited the game when the Hens were down 1-0, but he pitched well enough to keep the game close. Over his past two starts, Olson has struck out 19, walked two, and given up just five hits in 10.0 innings.
Rochester would tack on another run in the seventh inning against the Mud Hens bullpen to take a 2-0 lead. Toledo's bats were quiet for most of the game but came alive when it mattered most. Through the first seven innings tonight vs Red Wings pitching, the Hens offense managed just two hits and no runs.
Some drama unfolded in the bottom of the eighth inning. Time was called by the third base umpire in the middle of Justyn-Henry Malloy's at bat when a rogue ball from the Mud Hens bullpen rolled onto the field of play. Rochester's reliever Hobie Harris didn't notice and threw a no-pitch when time was called, which resulted in a fly out to left when Malloy swung at said pitch. The play was not counted and the at-bat resumed as if that pitch and fly out never happened, much to the frustration of the Red Wings dugout.
Malloy would later walk in the plate appearance, and after Andre Lipcius popped out for the second out of the inning, Tyler Nevin followed up with a double and Parker Meadows with a two-RBI single to tie the game. The next batter was Donny Sands, who doubled down the right field line to score Meadows from first and give the Hens their first lead of the game with two outs in the eighth inning. Miguel Diaz came into the game for the Hens in the ninth inning and struck out the side to close out the game.
This game snapped a brutal streak of eight straight home losses for the Mud Hens. Before tonight, the last time they won a game at Fifth Third Field was May 3rd against Indianapolis.
Today was Kerry Carpenter's first game of his major league rehab assignment with Detroit. He batted second in the order as the designated hitter and went 0-3 with three strikeouts, and was pinch hit for in the eighth inning.
The Hens and Wings will face off again tomorrow night at 7:05 P.M. at Fifth Third Field for game five of this six game series.
