Hens Pitchers Combine for No Hitter in Win over Knights
April 23, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The first game of the Halfway to Halloween series saw a 5-0 Mud Hens (7-6) victory over Charlotte on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Field. Four Hens pitchers combined for a no-hitter against Charlotte. This was the first no-hitter pitched by a Mud Hen since Jose Lima in 1994.
Matt Boyd was a late scratch in the game on Saturday and was replaced by righty Warwick Saupold. Saupold (5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) tossed a dime for his spot start, only allowing one base runner via a hit-by-pitch through five innings. Saupold now boasts a 1.50 ERA for Toledo.
Pitching out of the bullpen and aiding the no-hitter were Preston Guilmet and Logan Kensing, who appeared in his Mud Hens debut on Saturday. Charlotte threatened in the eighth inning after a hit-by-pitch and walk issued by Kensing, however the RHP retired the remaining batters in the inning. Bobby Parnell closed the game for Toledo, complete the no-hit bid.
The Hens bats came alive in the third inning that saw eight Mud Hens batters stand at the plate. 2B Corey Jones started off the inning when he notched his first hit of the season, a triple to right center field. CF Wynton Bernard sent Jones home on a bouncer to the mound that was bobbled by Knights SP Chris Volstad. The Hens played heads-up baseball all afternoon, taking advantage of three Charlotte errors.
SS Dixon Machado then ripped a ball down the left field line, scoring Bernard and Maybin. Machado now has 5 RBI's on the young season. DH Chad Huffman joined in on the fun in the third when he knocked a double to right field, sending home Machado. Huffman has made the most of his time with Toledo thus far, hitting .270 on the season. The Toledo bats continued their success in the fourth when C Miguel Gonzalez sent 1B Jordany Valdespin to home plate. Gonzalez is now batting .379 thus far in 2016.
CF Cameron Maybin, on a rehab stint issued by Detroit, was back in the Mud Hens lineup today after taking a pitch to the wrist during the game last Sunday. Maybin (.192 BA) went 0-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Coming off a sweep at the hands of Columbus, Toledo knocked in a total of five runs on five hits with no errors. The Hens knocked Volstad out of the game after the fifth inning.
Toledo is back at it again on Sunday for the second game of their three game set with the Charlotte Knights. The first pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
