Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Gary Sanchez doubled on a four-hit night, but his SWB RailRiders fell to the Syracuse Chiefs, 4-3.
SLUMP BUSTER: Sanchez's four hits tied a career-high mark now reached five times. Last season, he ended a 4-for-40 drought with a home run on Aug. 22, 2015 versus Rochester. The next night he went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Thursday night he halted a 1-for-16 skid with a home run at home against Buffalo. He followed that last night with a 4-for-5 showing that saw him double twice, drive in a run and score a run.
EXTRA, EXTRA!: Eight of Sanchez's 11 hits on the young year have gone for extra bases: five doubles, one triple, two homers.
LOCKED IN: Nick Swisher went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer. In seven games with SWB he has gone 10-for-26 with a pair of big flies slashing .385/.433/.654/1.087. His home run resulted in a loud roar from the Syracuse crowd.
GETTING ON: Rob Refsnyder went 1-for-3 with two walks and notched a pair of steals. He started at third base for the seventh time this year.
GUILTY AS CHARGED: Aaron Judge finished 2-for-5. He has hit safely in eight straight and in 13 of his 14 games played this year. Over the longer stretch he has slashed .322/.344/.492/.835.
ALL GOOD THINGS: Reliever Conor Mullee tossed a scoreless and hitless eighth inning. He also issued a full-count two-out walk to Brian Goodwin, the first free pass he has issued at Triple-A. He entered the plate appearance with 16 strikeouts against no walks over 10.1 innings at the minors' highest level.
KENNEDY HAD A SECRETARY NAMED LINCOLN: Today the RailRiders will attempt to avoid their first four-game losing skid since dropping four in a row from July 8-11, 2015. That run started with a pair of home losses to Syracuse and concluded with successive setbacks at Buffalo. This current three-game skid began with two home losses to Buffalo, and continued with a road setback at Syracuse.
RISPY BUSINESS: The RailRiders went 2-for-14 with men in scoring position, stranding 12. Over their last two losses, they have gone 4-for-23 with men in prime real estate, stranding 19.
LET'S GET SERIESOUS: Thursday night's loss handed the RailRiders their first home series setback since dropping two of three versus Syracuse from July 7-9, 2015. That included a 12-inning middle-game defeat at PNC Field. SWB's last home series loss in a four-game set? It came the prior series against Buffalo from July 4-6, 2015 including a July 5 day-night doubleheader. The RailRiders must win today and tomorrow to avoid their first losses in consecutive series since losing three straight sets from July 4-12, 2015 (vs. Buffalo, vs. Syracuse, at Buffalo).
OFF THE RAILS: Syracuse reliever Abel De Los Santos (1-0) got the win in his Triple-A debut...SWB starter Chad Green (0-2) took the loss...He allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings, whiffing three...Trevor Gott worked around a pair of ninth-inning hits from Judge and Sanchez to log his first save... SWB has lost three in a row for the first time this season, while the Chiefs played their league-high-tying eighth one-run game and logged their league-co-best fifth such win.
