New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Manchester, N.H.- The Toronto Blue Jays, parent club of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, have selected the contract of Fisher Cats starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez today. The 21-year old right-hander is slated to make his Major League debut and start on Wednesday night at 7:07 p.m. against the Oakland Athletics at Rogers Centre in Toronto. He will become the 48th player to make his Major League Baseball debut after playing for the Fisher Cats and the eighth player to do so in 2011, following Tim Collins, Brad Emaus, Luis Perez, David Cooper, Trystan Magnuson, Eric Thames and Zach Stewart.

Alvarez has spent most of the season with Fisher Cats where he posted an 8-5 record in 15 games, 14 starts with one complete game and a 2.86 ERA. The 6-1, 195 lb. right-handed pitcher made two starts with Dunedin of the Florida State League (A) to begin the season before joining New Hampshire. In his last five starts with the Fisher Cats, the Valencia, Carabodo, Venezuela native is 4-0 with 2.20 ERA. Alvarez was signed by the Blue Jays as an international free agent on October 17, 2006 at age 16.

Alvarez, an Eastern League All-Star in July, earlier this season became the eighth player in Fisher Cats history to play in the Major League XM All-Star Futures Game. He is the second Fisher Cats player to be promoted directly to the Blue Jays this season, joining Zach Stewart, who has since been traded to the Chicago White Sox.
