Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
TRENTON, NJ - Mike Fisher ripped three hits and drove in four of Binghamton's six runs to lead the B-Mets past Trenton 6-4 at Waterfront Park Tuesday night. Collin McHugh notched his fifth win with five innings of one-run work as the starter.
Binghamton (48-68) surged into the lead in the first inning against Thunder starter Graham Stoneburner. After the righty got the first two hitters of the frame, Reese Havens doubled into the right field corner. Stoneburner proceeded to walk the next two men to load the bases for Fisher. The B-Mets third baseman capitalized with a bases-clearing double over the head of rightfielder Zoilo Almonte.
Trenton (58-57) cut into the lead in the fifth after McHugh had chalked up four, scoreless innings. The composed righty grew a bit erratic at the outset of the frame. He hit Jose Gil with the first pitch of the inning and on the next pitch threw a wild pitch to move him into scoring position. Addison Maruszak pushed him to third with a deep flyout to right and the next man, Austin Krum, scored Gil with a groundout to second, trimming the deficit to two, 3-1.
The B-Mets got the run back almost instantaneously in the sixth. Fisher led off with a single to short off Stoneburner. Raul Reyes followed and clobbered a hanging 1-2 breaking ball over the wall in center for a two-run homer. His 10th homer of the season advanced the Binghamton lead to 5-1.
Stoneburner departed to the loss after 5 2/3 innings. He permitted a season-worst five runs on eight hits to draw his second setback.
Havens managed his second double of the game in the seventh inning against reliever Josh Romanski. Three batters later, Havens came home to score when Fisher doubled over the head of the leftfielder to put the B-Mets in control 6-1.
McHugh gave way to Tobi Stoner in the sixth. The reliever was largely untouched until the eighth inning when he allowed back-to-back, one-out singles. Rob Lyerly followed and made them count with a three-run jack to right on a first-pitch fastball.
Stoner allowed a leadoff triple in the ninth before exiting in favor of Josh Stinson. The Binghamton closer walked Jose Gil to start his outing. However, he picked him off on a third-to-first move. He then got Addison Maruszak to fly out to shallow right, leaving Trenton just one out to work with. Despite allowing the triple to score on a wild pitch, Stinson retired Austin Krum on a groundout to second to seal his third save of the season.
Reyes, Havens and Jordany Valdespin put together multi-hit games in addition to Fisher's big night. The B-Mets outhit the Thunder 12-7.
Binghamton will try for the series win Wednesday at 7:05 PM in the middle game of the three-game set. RHP Matt Harvey (1-3, 4.93) will start opposite LHP Shaeffer Hall (10-5, 4.23). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
