Helmer Skates in 1000th AHL Game

Oklahoma City Barons defenseman Bryan Helmer became the seventh player in American Hockey League history to surpass the 1,000 games played mark when he started in the Barons game against the Abbotsford Heat at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgayr tonight.

He joins six others who have played 1,000 games in the AHL including: Willie Marshall (1,205 career games), Fred Glover (1,201), Harry Pidhirny (1,071), Mike Nykoluk (1,069), Jody Gage (1,038) and Rob Murray (1,018).

Since joining the Barons January 7 the 38-year old Helmer has enjoyed a run that has seen him become the top scoring defenseman in AHL history and be named AHL Player of the Week (January 17). Entering tonight's game against Abbotsford, he owns AHL records for assists by a defenseman (402), points by a defenseman (526) and Calder Cup games played (138).

Following tonight's game against Abbotsford in Calgary, the Barons will travel to Abbotsford to take on the heat tomorrow. Faceoff is set for 9 p.m. (CT). The game can be heard on AM 1000 KTOK.
