Heated Game Ends in Devils Defeat

SYRACUSE, NY -- In their final game before the Holiday break, the Albany Devils lost, 3-2, against the Syracuse Crunch Saturday at Onondaga County War Memorial Arena. Reid Boucher extended his point streak to four games and Paul Thompson scored for the second straight night.

The Devils, who entered the game with two consecutive wins, moved to 13-10-1-4, while the Crunch extended their winning streak to nine games and improved 19-7-3-0.

The teams combined for 50 penalty minutes and special teams was a major factor in this Northeast Division matchup. The Devils went 1-4 on the power play, while the Crunch went 2-7.

Syracuse jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Mike Angelidis had a pass redirected in the slot by a Devils stick into the net at 8:41 with the man advantage. Moments later, Angelidis found Mike Blunden at the back door at 13:34.

Boucher pulled Albany within one with a power play goal in the second period. Joe Whitney setup Boucher for a one-timer from the blueline at 7:32. The goal, which included a secondary assist from Reece Scarlett, was Boucher's third in four outings and seventh of the season.

Syracuse's Vladislav Namestnikov answered less than two minutes later. He redirected Nikita Nesterov's point shot at 9:30 for the team's second man-up goal of the game.

In the third, the Devils pulled within one when Graham Black raced to keep the puck in the zone and then found Thompson cutting to the net at 7:56.

Scott Wedgewood, who made his 12th appearance of the season, turned aside nine shots in the first, 11 in the second and eight in the third for 28 saves. At the other end, Kristers Gudlevskis earned his 11th victory, making 26 saves.

Notes

During Reid Boucher's four-game point streak he has three goals and two assists ... Paul Thompson moved his point streak to three games (2g-2a) and Reece Scarlett extend his streak to three games (3a) ... Joe Whitney had three points (2g-1a) in as many games and Graham Black has two assists in two outings ... Albany was outshot 31-28 ... The Devils are 0-2-0-0 against the Crunch this season.
