Abbotsford Heat News Release

ABBOTSFORD BC - The Abbotsford Heat continue to chase down a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs this weekend with a pair of weekend games versus the San Jose Sharks affiliate, the Atlantic Division leaders, the Worcester Sharks.

These two teams met in Massachusetts a week ago and engaged in two of the most entertaining games all season. On Friday, the Abbotsford Heat would prevail 5-4 in a shootout, courtesy of the shootout winner from Heat forward Radek Smolenak. On Saturday, the two teams changed the lead six times, until JD Watt put the Heat up for good with a third period goal in a 4-3 Abbotsford victory.

The Heat (31-24-4-6) remains alone in second place in the North Division, but the battle continues to be tight throughout 2nd to 5th place. Rochester is just two points back of the Heat with three games in hand, while the Manitoba Moose remain four points back in fourth, with one game in hand. Lake Erie is in fifth place, nine points back, with the Monsters and Heat still facing each other five more times this season.

The Sharks are back in first place after a 5-2 win over the Moose in Winnipeg on Wednesday night. The Heat will have to keep tabs on defenseman Danny Groulx, who posted four assists in the Heat-Sharks game on Friday, while forward TJ Trevelyan scored three goals and one assist versus the Heat over the games last weekend.

For Abbotsford, Staffan Kronwall was a threat every time he touched the puck, setting up four of eight HEAT goals. Jason Jaffray also produced against the Sharks, popping in one goal and adding two helpers to the HEAT cause.

These two teams both have a lot to play for in the final month of the season. To get tickets, simply call 1-877-452 HEAT or go right up to the AESC box office to purchase tickets.
