Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose dropped a divisional battle last night when they suffered a 4-1 loss to the seventh place Grand Rapids Griffins in front of 9,561 fans at the Van Andel Arena. Lawrence Nycholat scored Manitoba's lone goal while Cory Schneider stopped 32 of 35 shots in the loss.

Yan Stastny suffered the first penalty of the night when he was locked up for hooking at 3:12. It only took the Griffins 49 seconds to capitalize on the powerplay when Jeremy Williams fired a wrist shot over Cory Schneider's left shoulder to open the scoring.

At 5:49 Tom Galvin was handed an interference penalty and moments later a fight broke out between Geoff Waugh and Justin Abdelkader. After the dispute, both players were handed fighting majors but the Manitoba defenseman received an extra two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. Manitoba's penalty kill-unit fought off the five-on-three disadvantage, but the Griffins extended their lead when play went to five-on-four. At 8:26, Jeremy Williams scored his second marker of the night to put his club in an early 2-0 lead.

The Moose and Griffins exchanged powerplays in the early half of the second period, but neither team scored on their respective advantages.

Lawrence Nycholat got his team on the board at 18:18 when he fired an accurate long shot from the point to beat Daniel Larsson on his glove side. However, Grand Rapids stole their two-goal lead back when Logan Pyett swept the puck from the doorstep and over goal-line a mere 1:16 later.

After 40 minutes of play, the Griffins were leading the game by two goals as well as the shot clock 25-15.

Back and forth consumed the third period and the Griffins were outshooting the Moose 10-7. In the final minutes of play, the Moose pulled Schneider to opt for an extra attacker. At 19:17 Patrick Rissmiller potted an empty netter to confirm a 4-1 victory for the hometown Griffins.
