Pirates Nipped By Sound Tigers

Bridgeport, CT - Trevor Smith's second goal of the game turned out to be the game winner as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers posted a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,819 at Arena at Harbor Yard.

Mike Radja, Tomas Marcinko and Matt Martin also scored for the Sound Tigers, who ended a three-game losing streak with the win. Bridgeport is now 28-27-3-6 on the season.

Mike Weber, Nathan Gerbe, Marc-Andre Gragnani and Philip Gogulla scored for the Pirates, who dropped to 35-19-5-3 with the loss. Mark Mancari registered two assists.

The Sound Tigers got off to a quick start as Smith gave the home side a 1-0 lead in the opening 90 seconds. Weber quickly answered to even things at one before Marcinko scored an unassisted goal to restore Bridgeport's one-goal lead. Gerbe completed the scoring in the opening period with his first goal since January 16th to even things up at two after one. Bridgeport duplicated their early-period success in the second striking in the opening 90 second of the period for the second time in the game as Martin capitalized on the power-play to give the Sound Tigers a 3-2 lead. The Pirates responded with the final two goals of the period, Gragnani tying things at three with a power-play goal followed by Gogulla's goal to give the Pirates their first lead of the game, 4-3. Radja tied the score with a shorthanded goal early in the third and Smith potted the eventual game winner midway through the third to complete the scoring.

The Pirates out shot the Sound Tigers 32-31 in the game as J.P. Lamoureux took the loss.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Smith, 2. Radja and 3. Mancari.

The Pirates continue a three-game road trip tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. when they are in Syracuse to face the Crunch. The trip ends Sunday in Buffalo, NY with a game against the Rochester Americans on Sunday at 4 p.m. Both games can be heard live on New Talk WLOB 95.5 and on line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.

The next Pirates home game takes place Friday, March 12th when the Manchester Monarchs visit the CCCC for a 7 p.m. start. Saturday, March 13th the Pirates take on the Binghamton Senators on Retro Night. The Pirates will wear 1993-1994 AHL championship jerseys, sponsored by Bath Savings Institution, and after the game fans will be able to bid on select jerseys at portlandpirates.com. 1993-94 team members Kent Hulst and Jeff Nelson will be in attendance at the game and the Portland Press Herald will be distributing a reprint of the front page from the Press Herald following the Calder Cup-clinching game. Special 1993-94 ticket pricing is in effect for the game, $8 for Quarter Deck and $10 for Main Deck. It's also a Labatt Blue Light Hockey Night in Portland with Labatt Blue Light specials at Binga's Stadium, Brian Boru, Frosty Pint and Spring Point Tavern before and after the game. Sunday, March 14th Pirates fans are encouraged to show their support for local charities by bringing teddy bears to the game. As a part of this annual charity event, fans will celebrate the first Pirates goal of the game by tossing their teddies onto the ice. All Teddy Bears collected will be donated to local charities, including The Center for Grieving Children and Mid Coast Hospital. It's also a Sudzie Family Five Pack Game. Five Main Deck tickets, five hot dogs or pizza slices, five sodas, one Daily Scroll game program, and one free Sudzie Minuteman exterior car wash all for only $60. That's less than half the $123 value.
