Bulldogs nip Wolves in shootout
March 5, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
HAMILTON, Ont.---The Chicago Wolves tied the game with 79 seconds left in regulation but went on to fall to the Hamilton Bulldogs in a shootout, 5-4, at Copps Coliseum Friday night.
Chicago center Kevin Doell was the only Wolves shooter to score in the shootout, while Wolves netminder Drew MacIntyre thwarted two of the five Bulldogs shots he faced.
West Division-leading Chicago (39-18-1-5) and North Division-leading Hamilton (41-14-3-5) boast the two best records in the American Hockey League's Western Conference, but the win helped the Bulldogs' pull six points ahead of the Wolves for first place in the conference.
After surrendering three straight goals to fall behind, 3-2, Chicago fought back to tie the game, 3-3, with 3:56 remaining in the third period. Center Johnny Pohl slipped the puck across to center Jason Krog streaking down the slot and he rifled a shot past Hamilton goaltender Curtis Sanford.
With 1:34 remaining in regulation, Hamilton right wing Mike Glumac redirected a shot in front of the net, his second goal of the game, to regain the lead for the Bulldogs, 4-3, but Chicago's Joey Crabb banked a shot past Sanford 15 seconds later to send the game into overtime, tied 4-4.
"It was nice to see us come back to salvage a point but they were just a little better than us tonight," said Wolves Head Coach Don Lever.
The Wolves drew first blood, 12:20 into the first period when defenseman Paul Postma beat Bulldogs goaltender Curtis Sanford, glove side.
Hamilton evened the score at one, with 3:49 left in the first period. Right wing J.T. Wyman carried the puck into the Wolves zone and shipped a pass to Ryan Russell, who flipped it past MacIntyre, near side.
The Bulldogs pulled ahead, 2-1, 3:20 into the second period. Defenseman P.K. Subban carried the puck into the zone and faked a shot before sliding the puck to Wyman streaking toward the net, and the right wing pushed it past MacIntyre.
Hamilton took a two-goal lead, 3-1, 12:29 into the second frame. MacIntyre made a series of stops but Glumac was eventually successful in knocking one past him, out of a scrum in front of the net.
MacIntyre (17-13-2) kicked out 29 shots in the loss.
Chicago made it 3-2 with 2:53 left to play in the second frame when right wing Spencer Machacek sent a centering pass for an open center Kevin Doell to knock over Sanford's glove.
Sanford (18-10-3) posted 29 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped three of four Wolves attempts in the shootout.
The Wolves return home to face the Milwaukee Admirals in an Amtrak Rivalry game at the Allstate Arena at 7 p.m.
