Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that pitcher Brent Lysander has joined the Cougars from extended spring training. Lysander takes newly-promoted pitcher Travis Banwart's spot on the 25-man active roster and will meet his teammates in Burlington, Iowa as the Cougars continue a road trip this evening. Lysander is expected to make his Cougars debut and start the second game of tomorrow's doubleheader against the Bees.
Lysander, a 6'7" pitcher whom the A's nabbed with their 16th round pick last June, made 16 appearances for the Vancouver Canadians (Short-A) in 2007, four of which were starts. Overall, the 23-year old posted a 2-1 record and 3.35 ERA, issuing just 14 walks in 51 innings pitched.
Last season at Sonoma State University in California, Lysander was a first-team All-American selection and received Pitcher of the Year honors in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Lysander, who was 10-2 with a 1.48 ERA in his final season at SSU, was part of a talented Seawolves squad that went 50-12 in 2007. Lysander's new teammate, fellow Cougar Adam Klein, was part of the California State (Los Angeles) team that eliminated the Seawolves in last spring's NCAA West Regional.
Lysander is the second former member of SSU to be drafted by the Athletics since Kane County became an Oakland affiliate prior to the 2003 season. The pitcher joins former Cougar and 2005 Team MVP Tommy Everidge who is currently with the A's Double-A affiliate in Midland, TX.
The team continues the current road trip in Burlington, Iowa for a 6:30 p.m. contest this evening. Cougars ace Craig Italiano (5-0, 0.90) opposes Burlington left hander Danny Duffy, who is scheduled to make his Bees debut.
