Dragons' hurlers stifle Lansing bats, 5-1

LANSING - Matt Klinker's gem led the Dayton Dragons to a 5-1 victory in the opener of a four-game set the with the Lansing Lugnuts at Fifth Third Field Monday night.

Klinker (3-2) pitched seven innings and surrendered just three hits to Lansing. He also fanned eight batters and twice had streaks where he retired at least eight consecutive batters. Klinker was only threatened by Lansing in the second inning when the Lugnuts had runners at second and third, but he was able to avoid trouble with a strikeout and groundout.

The Dayton offense, which had been stagnant coming into the series, came alive in the second inning to take a lead that it would never relinquish. The Dragons loaded the bases off of Lansing starter Chi-Hung Cheng with a single, a hit batsman, and an error.

Keltavious Jones stepped up for Dayton and drove home Jake Long and Logan Parker with a single into left-center field that made it 2-0. Justin Reed's sacrifice fly plated Devin Mesoraco to push the lead to 3-0.

Devin Mesoraco's fourth inning solo homer extended the advantage to 4-0 for Dayton. It was his first homer of the year. The run also gave the Dragons more than three in a game for the first time in 10 contests.

Dayton added one more run in the seventh to put the game away.

Lansing's only run came in the ninth inning when Kevin Ahrens's RBI double scored Moises Sierra, allowing the Lugnuts to avoid a shutout.

Cheng (2-1) took the loss for the Lugnuts after giving up four runs and four hits in 3 1/3 innings. Only two of the runs were earned to him.

Lansing (21-22) and Dayton (22-20) will continue the series Tuesday night. Brad Mills (3-2, 3.27) is scheduled to start for the Lugnuts, while Luis Montano (5-2, 3.21) will hurl for the Dragons. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
