Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Michael Anton tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 2-0 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night. Anton also shutout Wisconsin in a complete game on May 9 in Grand Chute, Wisconsin. Gordie Gronkowski and Clay Fuller drove in the Kernel runs. Michael Pineda was the tough luck loser for the Rattlers.

The starting pitching matchup was a rematch from the game on May 9 on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. In that game, Pineda tossed 6-1/3 scoreless innings. But, Michael Anton tossed a complete game, 4-hit shutout in a 5-0 Kernel victory.

On Dale & Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium Monday, the scoreless string for both pitchers continued...until Pineda blinked in the bottom of the sixth. Jay Brossman singled with one out and Efren Navarro coaxed a walk to put runners on first and second. Gronkowski was next and he blooped in a double just inside the foul line in right. Brossman and scored Navarro was thrown out trying to score from first, but the Kernels had the only run they would need.

The Kernels tacked on a run in the seventh inning off reliever Walter Suriel. Angel Castillo doubled with two outs. Clay Fuller singled to center and Castillo scored for a 2-0 lead.

That was more than enough for Anton. The left-hander allowed just two hits -- facing one over the minimum -- and retired the final 19 batters he faced. Gavin Dickey started the game with a single and Alex Meneses singled with one out in the third for the only two Wisconsin hits. Anton did not walk a batter and struck out three in his sixth win of the year.

Game two of the series is set for Tuesday afternoon. Juan Ramirez (2-2, 3.98) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Cedar Rapids plans to send Michael Davitt (1-3, 7.61) to the mound. Game time is noon.
