Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits played a complete game on Monday night at Modern Woodmen Park, tossing a four-hit shutout while collecting six extra-base hits on their way to a 6-0 win over the Peoria Chiefs in the first game of a four-game series.
Quad Cities (23-18) won for the sixth time in their last seven games, as right-handers Brian Broderick and Josh Wilson combined for seven strikeouts and no walks in a four-hit shutout. Peoria (14-30) managed just four singles in their seventh consecutive loss, a streak that was started by the River Bandits last Wednesday at O'Brien Field.
Midwest League Player of the Week Tommy Pham started the scoring in the bottom of the first, leading off the frame with a triple to center and scoring on a groundout by Jose Garcia. The 20-year-old leadoff hitter scored a first-inning run for the fifth time in his eight games with Quad Cities this season, including three leadoff homers.
The River Bandits blew things open with a four-run rally in the third. Garcia was at it again with an RBI-double to push the lead to 2-0, and he came home to score two batters later on a two-base hit by Paul Vazquez. Francisco Rivera, a 19-year-old from Mexico who made his professional debut on Sunday, followed with his first professional hit, a two-run bomb to right field that extended the lead to 5-0.
Meanwhile, Broderick and Wilson were stifling on the mound for Quad Cities. Broderick (1-3) needed just 56 pitches to get through five shutout innings, striking out three without issuing a walk and scattering four hits. Wilson (1) followed with four no-hit innings out of the bullpen, facing the minimum in a dominating performance to earn the save. The only batter to reach base against him did so on an error and was promptly erased by a double play, as Wilson struck out four.
D'Marcus Ingram added to the River Bandits' lead in the seventh, doubling down the left field line to drive home Mike Folli for a 6-0 score.
Alberto Cabrera (1-6) took the loss for Peoria, knocked off by the River Bandits for the second time in five days. He was touched up for five runs on five hits over five innings of work.
