
Augenstein continues domination of the \'Caps

SOUTH BEND, IN - For the second time this season, Bryan Augenstein pitched eight innings against the Whitecaps as South Bend prevailed, 4-1 in the first of a four game series. Augenstein faced the minimum 15 batters through five innings and held the Whitecaps to two hits through six innings before the âCaps combined two singles and a walk in the seventh to produce their only run of the night. At one point, Augenstein retired 15 hitters in a row.
On April 4, Augenstein allowed just four hits in eight shutout innings against West Michigan before the Whitecaps tallied two unearned runs against the bullpen in the ninth inning of a 2-1 victory.
South Bend used the long ball to jump out to an early lead against Brandon Hamilton. In his second start as a Whitecap, Hamilton allowed a two-out single in the first to Mike Mee, followed by a two-run homer to Sean Coughlin.
It was Coughlin's sixth homer in his first 15 games with the Silver Hawks.
Chance Wheeless hit a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning, which pushed the lead to 3-0. Wheeless scored in the sixth on an RBI single by Ramon Ramirez, which put the Hawks in front, 4-0.
Hamilton pitched four innings and allowed three runs on five hits and three walks as the starter. Andrew Hess threw four innings of relief and gave up a run on three hits. Ronnie Bourquin drove in Joe Tucker with an RBI single for the Whitecaps in the seventh.
Center fielder Kyle Peter made eight putouts for the Whitecaps, including five in a row in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Among the putouts by Peter were a diving catch and a leaping catch at the wall.
Evan Scribner pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his fourth save for South Bend.
