Pham Named MWL Player Of The Week
May 19, 2008 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Tommy Pham's torrid first week with the Quad Cities River Bandits has turned some heads around the minor league baseball world, resulting in Midwest League Player of the Week honors for the period lasting from May 12-18.
Pham, a 20-year-old leadoff hitter and center fielder from Las Vegas, Nevada, exploded onto the Midwest League scene with a home run on the first pitch he saw in a River Bandits uniform against Peoria on May 12. He went on to hit three leadoff homers in his first six games, all of which came within the first two pitches of the contest. Over the course of the week, Pham led the Midwest League with five home runs, 10 RBI, a .926 slugging percentage, and six extra-base hits while leading Quad Cities to a 5-2 record on their seven-game commuter road trip.
The prospect has shown both power and speed potential in his first week with the River Bandits, hitting .333 with two stolen bases and nine runs scored. Pham's quick start indicates tremendous improvement from his 2007 stint with Quad Cities, when he mustered just three hits in 32 at-bats before finishing the season in the New York-Penn League. A hot spring earned him a spot on the Palm Beach Cardinals' roster to open 2008, but a slow start in the Florida State League led to his transfer back to the Midwest League on May 10.
A 16th-round pick by the Cardinals in 2005, Pham hit .581 with 10 homers and 56 RBI as a senior at Durango High School to earn Second-Team High School All-America honors.
